Stillwater High volleyball came quite close to handing Edmond Memorial its first loss Thursday, but couldn’t quite finish the job.

The undefeated Lady Bulldogs took control of the final points in the fourth and fifth set, edging out Stillwater for victory. The Lady Bulldogs won the match, 3-2, improving to 5-0 while Stillwater dropped to 5-5 on the season.

“Gaining momentum and keeping it,” Stinchcomb said. “That’s been a struggle all season, and even last year we were a bit of a roller coaster ride.”

Stillwater held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set. It was back and forth with both teams hustling and diving on the court. SHS used a 3-0 rally – thanks to kills from seniors Jazzmin Kloos and Audrey Riley – to take a 20-19 lead.

Memorial rallied with its own 3-0 run before a Memorial miscue and ace from Stillwater senior Morgan Musselman tied the match at 22-22. Three-straight Memorial kills ended the set and forced a fifth-and-final set.

The final set was played in a similar fashion, as both teams fought back and forth for each point. Stillwater led 9-8 until it all fell apart for the Lady Pioneers.

Memorial scored the final seven points of the match. The Lady Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, scored four of those from kills and one from an ace. Memorial won 15-9.

“They are No. 3, but we thought we had it in the bag, clearly we didn’t,” Stinchcomb said. “Taking them to five (sets), I think we deserve to be in the top five, for sure.”

Stillwater won the first set 25-21 after taking control of it midway through. However, the momentum shifted as Memorial dominated the second set, 25-14.

The Lady Pioneers rallied and regained the momentum lost in the second set. It wast tie 15-15 until they took charge and won 25-18.

“We just get complacent and we get comfortable with things,” Stinchcomb said of her team’s second set loss. “We think we’re good and things will come easier than they will. We just lose it.”

The loss for No. 5 Stillwater was its fifth in the past six games, dating back to last weekend’s Union Tournament. Following Tuesday’s 3-0 loss at No. 1 Edmond Santa Fe, Stillwater had a two-hour talk in its locker room Wednesday and practiced for only 30 minutes.

Although her team was barely on the court Wednesday, Stinchcomb is happy with where her team is headed, despite Thursday’s loss.

“I feel like we hashed out a lot,” Stinchcomb said. “We spent two hours in the locker room just talking about a bunch of stuff. We figured it out. I saw a different team today for sure, but it started to fade toward the end.”

Stillwater is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Enid. SHS will host Mustang on Aug. 30. Both matches will start at 6 p.m.
